Alice Returns After 15-Year EA IP War as Creator Reimagines Characters as Bunnies

In a reveal video, McGee acknowledged the long-standing frustration of the community, noting that while many long for a traditional Alice sequel, the rights situation makes that impossible. Previously, a disheartened McGee had urged fans to “move on,” stating that Electronic Arts had no intention of allowing him or anyone else to continue the franchise.

But when one rabbit hole closes, another must be dug. McGee explained that he has successfully integrated Wonderland into the Plushie Dreadfuls mythos—or perhaps more accurately, the other way around. He revealed that the current story places the Plushie Dreadfuls universe within the framework of Wonderland, with an external development team currently working on a demo.

McGee has also been sharing optimistic progress reports from his family’s boat. In a mid-January update, he noted: “I’ve hit on a concept to link this story properly with the ending of Madness Returns, but in a way that remains firmly in ‘spiritual successor’ territory. This allows us to avoid the wrath of certain corporations. It’s logical, intriguing, and it actually works.”

“I’m incredibly pleased with this direction,” McGee continued. “I’ve already outlined major portions of the middle and conclusion, along with the core message. This gives us a powerful opening that longtime fans will adore while establishing a solid foundation for the Plushie Dreadfuls universe.”

This news is a delight for fans of the macabre. Few titles capture the hauntingly beautiful whimsy of 2011’s Alice: Madness Returns, and the prospect of returning to that aesthetic—even through a new lens—is thrilling. For those of us who appreciate the dark charm of McGee’s vision, entering a world of sentient, gothic rabbits feels like a natural and exciting progression.

Explore why the original Alice reimagining remains a masterpiece of gothic action and psychedelic storytelling.
