A new Star Wars tabletop role-playing game is on the way from Asmodee’s Edge Studio. Developers also said they hope to keep the most recent iteration of the game, created by Asmodee’s Fantasy Flight Games, in print. The announcement was made on Friday.

Since the 1980s there have been multiple versions of the Star Wars tabletop RPG (TTRPG), including a d20-based design by Dungeons & Dragons publisher Wizards of the Coast. The latest version rolled out in 2012 with Star Wars: Edge of the Empire. That was followed up by Star Wars: Age of Rebellion and Star Wars: Force and Destiny, which helped refocus the game on different parts of the cinematic timeline.

Heading up this new project is Sam Gregor-Stewart, the former lead developer on Edge of the Empire. Now the RPG manager for Edge Studio, he should help provide some continuity to the franchise. He makes it clear, however, that fans should expect something different this time around.

“With Edge, I’m really thrilled to have a chance to try something new,” Gregor-Stewart said in the announcement post. “I hope we can create something fresh for our fans, while at the same time creating something that is going to awaken the same passion for Star Wars in a new generation that I felt growing up.”

Edge Studio is also creating a TTRPG based in Fantasy Flight’s Twilight Imperium setting. A 40-page sample was revealed Saturday at Free RPG Day.
