Eiji Aonuma, the longtime producer of The Legend of Zelda, recently shared that he had hoped an internally developed Nintendo title would be the first in the franchise to debut on the Switch 2. However, despite *Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment* claiming that spot, Aonuma noted that the collaboration with Koei Tecmo has provided the team with fresh inspiration for the series' future.

During a detailed discussion with 4Gamer, Aonuma lightheartedly admitted his competitive spirit regarding the series' arrival on new hardware. "Age of Imprisonment is officially the debut Zelda experience for the Nintendo Switch 2," he remarked. "In all honesty, we really wanted the honor of launching the 'first' one ourselves."

Throughout the production of *Age of Imprisonment*, Nintendo provided Koei Tecmo with extensive narrative archives, including deep-lore world-building and plot points that hadn't previously been utilized. This collaborative effort ensured that every element of the game remained consistent with Nintendo's overarching creative direction.

Revisiting these foundational notes for the partnership reinvigorated the internal Zelda team. "Working with Koei Tecmo has truly sparked our imaginations," Aonuma explained. "You might see those influences reflected in our next Zelda project. As you play through Age of Imprisonment, I hope you'll keep that in mind while waiting for what we have in store next."

While Nintendo has yet to officially pull back the curtain on a new mainline entry, it is widely understood that development on the next legendary adventure is almost certainly underway, following the series' tradition of constant evolution.

Fans analyzing the relationship between Link and Zelda may find themselves at a crossroads, as Age of Imprisonment characterizes them strictly as friends—though after nearly four decades of history, many players are still adept at reading between the lines.
