The Last of Us Co-Creator Rejects AI, Citing Environmental Impact and the Value of Human Creativity

The Last of Us Part 1 Key Art

Straley further argued that the struggles and triumphs experienced during the creative process are what define a work of art. “Watching a team tackle and resolve complex problems—that’s what it means to be part of a creative community. AI doesn’t inspire me. I have no interest in watching a film that I know was just the result of a prompt. How can an algorithm truly translate a person’s inner fantasies, childhood experiences, or unique trauma? Prompting an AI doesn’t reach the soul of the human experience.”

On social media, Straley acknowledged that while generative AI may be an unstoppable force due to lack of regulation and massive financial backing, he is sticking to his principles. “I’ve made my choice. I don’t utilize generative AI or Large Language Models in my professional work. That might change in the distant future out of necessity, but for now, I’m avoiding it.” Regarding his new studio, Wildflower Entertainment, Straley noted that while there isn’t a formal ban, he is “99.9% certain” no one on his team is using these tools.

The former Naughty Dog director is relishing the opportunity to build a unique, “weird” game that won’t require a technical remaster in four years just because the underlying software has become obsolete.
