Recent data reveals that Xbox Series X and S console sales throughout 2025 have fallen dramatically short of initial market projections.
According to reporting from CNBC and market analysis by VGChartz, combined sales for the period reached approximately 1.7 million units. However, industry insider KeplerL2 suggested an even more conservative figure, stating, “I think it’s closer to 1 million.”
Regional performance paints a challenging picture; in the UK, Xbox sales plummeted by 51% compared to the previous year, while Nintendo saw a 41% surge and PS5 sales dipped by 29%. In the US market, hardware spending contracted by 27% and accessories fell by 13%, though software expenditure managed a marginal 1% increase.
By December 2025, the cumulative lifetime sales for the Xbox Series X|S are estimated at 34.2 million units—trailing the Xbox One’s trajectory by 9 million units at the same stage in its lifecycle. Despite these underwhelming hardware figures, Microsoft continues to pivot its strategy toward software revenue, digital services, and the expansion of Game Pass rather than prioritizing console shipments.
