A project from Romero Games, which previously faced the brink of cancellation, has been officially resurrected. According to reports from Insider Gaming, the title was originally developed under the name Hellslayer and drew mechanical inspiration from Hotline Miami, casting players as a priest battling demonic hordes.
Industry insider Mike Straw shared:
This new project is not the same one being developed in partnership with Microsoft. While that version has effectively vanished, they are scavenging its best elements for this new direction.
He clarified that the original iteration of Hellslayer was envisioned as a first-person shooter featuring rapid, instantaneous respawns.
Doom co-creator John Romero confirmed that the project has undergone significant evolution:
The game has been almost entirely overhauled, though it incorporates numerous pieces from the original work. We aren’t starting from a blank slate. The design is radically different, but the team is incredibly energized.
Romero noted that the new version has become “much smaller” in scope, a change that has reinvigorated the developers.
The project was salvaged after initial investors pulled out, leading the studio to briefly consider a total cancellation.
