Many people think that World of Warcraft is an obsolete license, in part because of its economic model which is no longer really in line with today’s market. By revealing the first sales figures of its new expansion, Blizzard Entertainment is doing a nice pie-nose to these received ideas. Indeed, on the day of its launch, more than 3.7 million copies of World of Warcraft Shadowlands have been sold, setting a new record for the best-selling PC game in the history of the video game industry. World of Warcraft Shadowlands thus dethrones another game from Blizzard laboratories since it was Diablo 3, which had recorded 3.5 million copies sold over the same period.
History of bulking a little more the chest, Blizzard Entertainment recalls that the community of World of Warcraft remains solid across the world, knowing that the license knew to preserve the greatest number of subscriptions of a month or more, compared to the number subscriptions taken out before and after the release of World of Warcraft expansions over the past 10 years (in the West and East regions, however, the press release specifies). For comparison, especially over the past decade, players have spent more time on Azeroth to date than before. Impressive indeed.
