Weezer paid tribute to their COVID-sidelined Hella Mega tourmates Fall Out Boy on Wednesday night by covering the band’s signature hit “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down.” After it was announced earlier in the day that “out of an abundance of caution” FOB would miss out on the Wednesday New York and Thursday Boston dates of the the tour due to a positive COVID test from an “individual on the band’s team,” Weezer made sure their presence was felt anyway.
In fact, not only did Weezer rip a killer version of the 2005 single that hit No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 — giving FOB their first top 10 hit — but opening act The Interrupters did the honors as well with an energetic take that had the sparse early audience getting in on the vocal action. While the ska punkers did a full version with audience participation, Weezer singer Rivers Cuomo went it alone with his flying V guitar as well as an assist from the stadium crowd.
“It’s important to note that everyone on the entire tour, both band and crew, are fully vaccinated,” read a statement from Fall Out Boy on Instagram explaining their absence from the tour that was delayed for a year due to COVID. “Each band and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows.” The statement also noted the Hella Mega tour has a full-time COVID safety protocol officer on staff.
