“We Tried It, But We Didn’t Like It”: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Game Director Responds to AI Allegations

Guillaume Broche has confirmed that every element within Expedition 33 was handcrafted by human artists.

Guillaume Broche, the lead developer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, recently addressed the mounting controversy and allegations surrounding the studio’s purported use of generative AI in a new interview.

Everything in this game is the result of human creativity. We were already deep into development when AI first emerged as a trend in 2022. It was a novel tool that we briefly explored, but it didn’t sit right with us—the results felt synthetic and wrong. While we initially used it to generate temporary placeholders for missing textures, those were quickly purged from the final build.
Guillaume Broche, Game Director of Clair Obscur: Expedition.

Broche not only underscored that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is entirely human-authored but also reassured fans that the studio has no intention of integrating AI tools into its future workflow.

It is difficult to predict how the industry landscape will shift, but for us, the focus will always remain on human-driven artistry.
