The creators of Slay the Spire 2 have confirmed they have no intention of introducing microtransactions, despite “threats” from enthusiastic fans eager to buy up every piece of cosmetic content the studio could possibly release.
In light of the game’s Early Access debut, Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano sat down with Destructoid to discuss the future trajectory of the highly anticipated sequel.
According to Yano, Slay the Spire 2 will remain free of paid DLC and microtransactions, largely because the developers “absolutely loathe them.” He noted that “many of our players are jokingly threatening to purchase every cosmetic we ever put out,” yet the team remains committed to ensuring all users have access to the exact same content. As such, the initial purchase of the game will remain the only required investment.
Nevertheless, the team plans to aggressively expand the title as it moves toward version 1.0. Yano acknowledged that the Early Access build “is currently missing a significant amount of content,” leading the studio to focus on delivering “pure content”—new mechanics, fresh cards, and other features that directly impact core gameplay.
The developers are also counting on the modding community to play a pivotal role. Yano explained that the sequel’s architecture allows for significant overrides in the codebase, giving players near-limitless freedom to create their own modifications. The team is already working to streamline this process, though it remains uncertain if a dedicated modding toolkit will eventually be provided.
Furthermore, Yano chose not to reveal a formal development roadmap. He mentioned that the team operates in “real-time,” but they worry that if updates roll out too frequently, players might not have enough time to actually digest the changes.
