It appears the internal harmony of Journey was nearly shattered just two years ago. In a recent social media update, the band’s co-founder and lead guitarist, Neal Schon, addressed assertions made by frontman Arnel Pineda regarding his attempts to exit the legendary rock group.

Posting to Facebook on Monday, Schon suggested that the narrative currently circulating in the media lacks essential context. “There’s been some recent press and speculation that doesn’t reflect the full picture,” the guitarist noted.

Schon’s comments follow a candid feature in Rolling Stone where Pineda admitted he was on the verge of skipping the band’s ongoing farewell tour. Pineda expressed frustration over the 2024 itinerary, claiming he had requested a collaborative discussion regarding the schedule due to his age and ongoing personal challenges. According to the singer, the band proceeded to book a grueling 60-date run without his input.

Pineda claimed that his dissatisfaction led him to send an email to his bandmates that went unanswered. He further alleged that he attempted to resign from the group twice, only to be met with total silence from the rest of the members.

However, the reality of the situation is tied to significant legal complexities. Both Schon and Pineda acknowledged that their agreement with the live entertainment giant AEG contains a clause that effectively prevents the band from touring without Pineda at the helm. Schon emphasized this point in his statement, noting that touring at such a high level involves a multitude of stakeholders, including promoters and agents.

“For clarity, no one was ever prevented by me from making their own personal decisions,” Schon stated, while adding that the entire group was advised by legal representatives that “contractual obligations tied to touring” had to be respected.

Ultimately, Schon indicated that his primary focus remains on the fans and preserving the band’s musical legacy. Journey’s Final Frontier Tour is scheduled to continue through August, with performances spanning the United States and a scheduled stop in Vancouver.
