‘Timing Is Key’: Nio Garcia on How J Balvin & Bad Bunny Jumped on ‘AM Remix’

Like his previous bangers (“Te Bote,” “La Jeepeta”), “AM” was born spontaneously after telling his producer that he needed a bomb comeback track.

“I have an exquisite and marvelous team. I always try to create a cool ambiance,” Nio Garcia told Billboard during a Live Q&A on Instagram. “We created many songs at the same time but I focused on this one because I knew it was going to be a hit.”

Produced by Flow La Movie, Xound, Botlok and Yama, “AM” marked Garcia’s first single of 2021. It’s a saucy reggaeton track that cleverly counts from one to 10 to describe everything he wants to do to a girl.

The song has grown on TikTok, amassing nearly 2 million video creations at the time of publishing.

“I give fans my music and TikTokers do their magic,” Garcia says of the hip-swaying dance challenge. “TikTok is helping these songs become hits. It takes your music to different places.”

A remix with J Balvin and Bad Bunny came five months later.

“I was taken by surprise,” Garcia admits. “I found out Bad Bunny wanted to be part of the remix just two days before it came out. I couldn’t believe that I managed to make another collection piece.”

He confesses, however, that a remix was initially never in his plans. “This is my biggest song up to now and I wanted to cherish it as is, but we achieved a unique remix and Bad Bunny gave it that push,” he notes.

Though Garcia and Bunny previously joined forces on the 2018 “Te Bote Remix,” this is his first collaborative effort with Balvin, calling it a dream come true.

“He has advised me during these past three years. He always told me that I have to continue working and the moment will arrive,” he recalls. “That’s why at the ending of the music video, he says ‘time is key’ because I was after him to collaborate and it finally happened with ‘AM.’”

On the Billboard charts, García scores his fourth top 10 on Hot Latin Songs as the remix soars 16-4 on the July 10-dated survey. The song also gifts Garcia his highest debut on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 as it bows at No. 41.

“When I receive this type of news, it becomes the motor of my life and career,” he says. “It encourages me to get more in the studio and create more music for my audience.”
