The Witcher author has an “excellent” deal with The Witcher 4 developers, but CD Projekt now rarely asks him for advice

The Witcher 4

Andrzej Sapkowski, the author behind The Witcher novels, says he currently enjoys a favourable arrangement with developer CD Projekt — though the studio rarely asks him for input on The Witcher 4.

Speaking at a book event for his new novel and Witcher prequel, Crossroads of Ravens — an event attended by GamesRadar+ — Sapkowski was asked whether he had worked with CD Projekt Red on The Witcher 4. He replied that he had not been involved in the development, which may explain why he recently criticised an element of the RPG series as being “narratively incorrect.”

Sapkowski said his relationship with CD Projekt Red used to be a little closer. With earlier entries in the franchise the studio would occasionally consult him for background and clarification. Today, however, he says those requests for details are “so rare.”

That shift could reflect the studio’s growing confidence after producing several Witcher games over many years, or simply the fact that much of the series’ lore in the games is the developers’ own creation. Given how his book series concludes, Sapkowski has said it would be “impossible” to continue the novels with a direct sequel — the games, however, are set beyond the events of his final book.

Sapkowski hasn’t been directly involved in The Witcher 4, but elements from Crossroads of Ravens are likely to influence the RPG, just as material from Season of Storms informed parts of The Witcher 3.
