‘The Voice,’ ‘American Idol’ & More Nominated for Critics Choice Real TV Awards

NBC’s The Voice and ABC’s American Idol are among the nominees for best competition series: talent/variety at the Critics Choice Real TV Awards. The other nominees in the category are Legendary (HBO Max), The Masked Singer (Fox) and World of Dance (NBC).

The Critics Choice Real TV Awards, in their third year, recognize excellence in nonfiction, unscripted and reality programming. The show, sponsored by the Critics Choice Association (CCA) and nonfiction producers’ organization NPACT, is a reality TV companion to the Critics Choice Television Awards, now in their 11th year. The Critics Choice brand also presents film awards, now in their 26th year.

RuPaul’s Drag Race leads with five nominations. Four programs — Queer Eye, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi and Top Chef — each received three nods.

Winners will be announced (albeit in a press release) on Monday, June 21. Winners in two categories — female star of the year and male star of the year — will be chosen by fan voting, which is now open at criticschoice.com.

“As the number of platforms continues to grow, the quality of unscripted television programming has skyrocketed, and we are thrilled to be able to recognize so much great work,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin.

Alex Trebek, the late, much-loved host of Jeopardy, will be honored posthumously with the Impact Award, which recognizes an individual for the positive impact they made or have made on the world of nonfiction content.

Netflix leads among networks with 22 nominations. HBO/HBO Max follows with 14 nods.

The Critics Choice Real TV Awards were launched in 2019 when the CCA and NPACT joined forces. A nominating committee made up of CCA members determines the nominees in all competitive categories. Winners will be chosen by a vote of the CCA membership. NPACT leads the selection of non-competitive, discretionary awards.

The Critics Choice Association bills itself as the largest critics organization in the U.S. and Canada, representing more than 400 television, radio and online critics. It was organized in 2019 with the merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association. NPACT is the trade association for nonfiction production companies doing business in the U.S.

Bob Bain and Joey Berlin serve as executive producers for the Critics Choice Real TV Awards. Michelle Van Kempen is executive producer for NPACT.
