Hello!
In June, we plan to implement a new anti-aliasing technology, TAA (temporal anti-aliasing), into the game. First of all, we invite you to evaluate it in comparison with other anti-aliasing technologies that are currently available in the game. The video comparison was recorded in 1080p:
This technology is used to get rid of the effect when object edges appear somewhat jagged. Players often refer to such edges or objects as “pixelated” and jokingly say that one can cut oneself with them. Well, there is some truth in that: it does cut a particularly sophisticated player’s eye, and quite severely.
At the moment, the following aliasing technologies are available in Crossout: FXAA (Fast approXimate Anti-Aliasing), MSAA (Multisample Anti-Aliasing) and SMAA (Subpixel Morphological Anti-Aliasing). All of them provide good solutions, but they, using various algorithms, can smooth out only the edges of triangles or sharp borders. If compared with TAA, the comparison results will not be in their favour.
The “TAA” technology calculates a number of previously rendered frames, taking the position of pixels in dynamics into account. As a result, the “jaggedness” on the edges of objects and flickering on shiny surfaces are eliminated from the image that the player sees. Not only does the technology provide smoother edges and edges for objects, but it also adds more detail to them. The way TAA works is it renders the image in a higher resolution and then reduces it to the size of your screen.
The effect of the new anti-aliasing will be best seen if you are playing with the above average quality settings. Depending on the complexity of a certain scene, the technology, like other anti-aliasing solutions, may have minor effect on the frame rate, so we recommend using it on systems that allow you to run the game on medium-high graphics settings without problems.
With the introduction of TAA, we plan to abandon MSAA as the most “heavy” technology currently available in the game. FXAA and SMAA will still be available in Crossout.
