TEG, the Australian live entertainment, ticketing and tech giant, expands its portfolio of music events through a partnership with Laneway, the much-loved, multi-city festival brand.
Established in 2005 as a one-off street party in Melbourne, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival has evolved into a trans-Tasman roadshow selling over 100,000 tickets each year while showcasing breakthrough artists.
Over time, the likes of Billie Eilish, Lorde, Haim, Denzel Curry, Run The Jewels, Tame Impala and Flume have graced its stages, and the fest has collected a hattrick of National Live Music Awards.
The boutique show briefly routed into Asia through a Singapore leg and, in a first for an Australian festival brand, Laneway expanded into the United States in 2013 with show at the Meadow Brook Music Festival in suburban Detroit (the U.S. event, however, has yet to return for a second outing).
For its most recent run in January 2020, Laneway Festival visited sites in five Australian cities, with a lineup featuring The 1975, Charli XCX, Ruel, Earl Sweatshirt, Tones And I, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and many more. The 2021 edition went on hiatus due to the health crisis.
“We have enormous respect for Laneway,” comments TEG CEO Geoff Jones, “which has grown from a Melbourne street party into a world-class festival and with a strong touring arm, consistently breaking new local and international artists to the youth market in the region.”
Laneway Festival founders Danny Rogers and Jerome Borazio will remain as substantial owners, according to TEG, and will continue to run the festival and the business as co-managing directors, in partnership with TEG.
In a joint statement, the Laneway pair shared an update on their popular indie and left-leaning music event: “We are super determined to get Laneway Festival back on the circuit ASAP, delivering you the amazing line-ups and experiences that you’ve grown accustomed to.”
Financial terms of the arrangement weren’t disclosed.
Rogers and Borazio also paid tribute to promoter and former partner Michael Chugg “and his incredible teams, past and present. The festival would not exist today without his, and their vision, passion and support.”
Based in Sydney, TEG’s empire includes TEG Live, TEG Dainty, TEG MJR, TEG Van Egmond, Handsome Tours, Qudos Bank Arena and other interests, and the group boasts seven country offices around the globe. TEG was acquired in late 2019 by investment company Silver Lake.
