Taylor Swift’s Limited Theatrical Event Opens at No. 1, Rolling in Tens of Millions

Taylor Swift’s one-weekend-only film, The Official Release Party of a Showgirl, launched atop the domestic box office in a commanding debut.
The limited theatrical event — a behind-the-scenes presentation tied to Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl — played in 3,702 locations and was projected by Swift’s team and distributor AMC Theatres to earn between $28 million and $32 million in its opening frame. Independent studio estimates suggested the total could climb even higher, with some analysts forecasting a start north of $35 million (The Hollywood Reporter).
Audience composition skewed heavily female: nearly 90% of opening-day viewers on Friday, Oct. 3, were women, according to THR’s reporting.
By contrast, Dwayne Johnson’s A24 wrestling drama, The Smashing Machine, underperformed expectations in its opening, with projections around $6 million versus earlier estimates in the $12–$14 million range.
Fans responded enthusiastically to Swift’s special, awarding it an A+ CinemaScore — matching the reception for her 2023 concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Clocking in at 89 minutes, the event features the premiere of the music video for the album’s lead track, “The Fate of Ophelia,” alongside exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, lyric videos, and personal commentary from Swift about the songs and their creative origins.
The theatrical engagement ran only from Oct. 3–5 as a limited event. For a deeper look at how the film dominated the weekend and the biggest takeaways from the rollout, see Billboard’s full coverage.
This latest release continues Swift’s track record in long-form film: she previously appeared in the 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana and followed that with the record-breaking 2023 concert film The Eras Tour, which grossed $179.2 million domestically and became the highest-grossing concert movie in U.S. history.
