While generative AI remains a lightning rod for controversy, the technology has enjoyed an exceptionally lucrative year. Data from Steam suggests that titles openly utilizing these tools have generated an estimated $660 million in gross revenue.

According to a report by Ichiro Lambe of Totally Human Media, approximately 10,258 games on Steam—roughly 8% of the platform's entire library—now include AI disclosures. This figure has surged from 7,818 titles just five months ago. Despite the ethical debates, studios show little sign of slowing their adoption of the technology.

The integration of AI has sparked significant pushback, casting a shadow over anticipated projects like the upcoming *Divinity*. It even caused a stir at the Indie Game Awards when the acclaimed JRPG *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* had its Game of the Year victory rescinded after developer Sandfall Interactive confirmed the use of generative AI during production.

Nevertheless, the financial incentives are undeniable. Lambe's data indicates that 12 AI-disclosing titles on Steam have reached eight-figure revenues. Furthermore, 33 games have surpassed the $1 million mark, while 170 have cleared six figures. Major releases such as *Stellaris*, *Call of Duty: Black Ops 6*, and *inZOI* are among these top earners, debunking the idea that AI use is limited to low-effort "slop" titles.

Given these massive returns, it’s hardly surprising that industry giants like Ubisoft and the self-proclaimed "AI-first" Krafton are leaning heavily into the tech. While the trend may be disappointing to many, the lack of financial consequences makes its continued expansion inevitable.

Reflecting on the digital age, Hideo Kojima recently noted that Metal Gear Solid 2 is often misinterpreted as a story about AI, when it is actually a meditation on the future of human existence.
