Steam and EGS bans couldn’t stop Horses: Sales exceeded 18,000 copies in two weeks

The psychological horror title Horses has surpassed 18,000 copies sold in the two weeks following its debut, generating approximately $65,000 in revenue for the development team.

This commercial performance is particularly noteworthy considering the game was deplatformed by both Steam and the Epic Games Store shortly before its December launch. Publisher Santa Ragione confirmed that while the earnings were sufficient to settle outstanding debts and compensate creator Andrea Lucco Borlera, the proceeds fall short of funding the studio’s future projects.

Currently, Horses remains available on GOG, Humble, and Itch.io. Valve initially rejected the game in 2023, citing concerns over “sexual content involving minors.” Despite the developers refuting these allegations and clarifying that the contentious scene was removed from the final version, Valve upheld its decision to ban the title.

In a similar move, the Epic Games Store revoked its distribution approval just 24 hours before the scheduled release, pointing to its policy against “indecent” content. The developers have criticized both platforms for their opaque enforcement of rules and a persistent lack of communication throughout the process.

The studio acknowledged that the team must now pursue external contract work to stabilize their financial situation, as the threat of permanent closure remains a likely outcome for the company.
