Riot Games was quick to address recent leaks, validating plans for a massive transformation within League of Legends. Bloomberg reports that the project, currently codenamed “League Next,” is set to be the most ambitious overhaul in the franchise’s history, with a targeted launch in 2027.
This initiative is not League of Legends 2; rather, the game will retain its core identity while undergoing a comprehensive reconstruction designed to sustain it for the next decade.
We had intended to disclose these details in early January alongside the launch of the new season, but recent leaks necessitated an earlier announcement.
The update will feature a total graphical modernization, covering characters, user interfaces, and maps to make the experience more accessible for newcomers. At the same time, the technical infrastructure is being upgraded to streamline the rollout of future content. Riot has confirmed a full suite of changes: a new client integrated directly with the gameplay, a visual refresh of Summoner’s Rift coupled with mechanical adjustments, and a revamped rune system. The primary objective is to improve the onboarding experience, which has long been a significant hurdle for League of Legends.
The development team emphasized that these efforts are part of a long-term, player-centric strategy. While last year served as the foundation for this evolution, the next phase aims to build on that progress and establish the framework for a new era. Riot expects to provide more specific details regarding release windows and implementation stages in 2026.
