The developers chose to preserve several compelling ideas.

Over the years the Resident Evil franchise spawned a variety of projects, and not all of them made it to release. Before Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom was developing a multiplayer title that was ultimately cancelled. Still, the effort wasn’t wasted — some concepts and work were retained.

In an interview with Press Start Australia, Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumadzawa revealed that the game will include elements from the cancelled online project:

Some elements remained, but we cannot disclose what they are or how they were implemented.

The creator noted that the horror element in that project was “moderate,” and they questioned whether franchise fans would appreciate it:

We examined it carefully and asked ourselves, “Will fans of the franchise enjoy this?” We concluded that they probably would not. That’s why we returned to a single-player approach. However, since [the cancelled online game] contained interesting elements, we incorporated parts of that version into the final release to make it even more engaging.

Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026.
