As tools like Sora 2 are rolled out more widely, debates over AI’s place in game development have intensified. Some industry veterans — including Yoko Taro — even predict that, in a few decades, AI could supplant human developers.
Motoi Okamoto, producer of the Silent Hill series, responded to Hideo Kojima’s recent interview.
Kojima suggested that the future of remakes and sequels will likely be shaped by AI: they are easier and safer to produce than original titles. His remarks quickly circulated online. In essence, Kojima warned that if the industry focuses only on sequels, AI could readily replace human creators.
Okamoto agreed with the observation but added a caveat: not all sequels are the same. He believes AI might piece together a script for another Silent Hill, but it would struggle to conceive a game that fundamentally reinvents the franchise.
“AI wouldn’t have come up with setting the story in 1960s Japan or recruiting Ryukishi07 as a writer. Those kinds of decisions demand human courage.”
