While modern industry anxieties have shifted toward the rise of generative AI, the persistent nuisance of invasive monetization remains a major point of contention. For Mahler, the issue is rooted in fundamental greed—a motivation he actively works to distance himself from.
“The dynamic between developers and their audience must be equitable, ideally leaning in favor of the players, as they are the ones who ultimately grant us the privilege of continuing our work,” Mahler explained. “The developer acts as a servant to the public; while they hold the creative reins, they must never forget that they serve the people, not their own bottom line.”
He added, “Our goal is to provide immense value at a fair price point, ensuring our community receives high-quality experiences that keep them excited for our future projects. That is the natural order of the industry.”
Although “freemium” mechanics are typically associated with live-service multiplayer environments, they have increasingly encroached upon single-player narratives through exclusive gear or progression shortcuts. Mahler, however, has drawn a clear line in the sand, ensuring that such tactics have no place at Moon Studios under his watch.
“Any creator still pushing ‘horse armor’ or compromising game design to nickel-and-dime their players has clearly missed the memo. The landscape has evolved,” Mahler noted.
“Greed isn’t a sustainable virtue. Even Gordon Gekko faced the consequences in the end,” he remarked, referencing the infamous Wall Street antagonist’s eventual downfall.
No Rest for the Wicked debuted in Early Access in 2024, with a full 1.0 launch slated for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X at a future date.
