At the time, Nintendo held significant leverage in the partnership. While Sega was reeling from the critical failure of *Sonic ’06* and a lackluster GBA port of the original *Sonic the Hedgehog*, Mario was riding high on the massive success of the masterpiece *Super Mario Galaxy*. In the hierarchy of gaming mascots, there was no doubt who reigned supreme.

A retrospective look at the series’ history confirms this trend. Mario appears slightly ahead on the covers of the 2012 London Olympics, as well as the Vancouver and Sochi Winter Games. Interestingly, the two finally appear as equals on the artwork for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 installments. Perhaps the struggles of the Wii U era were enough to humble the plumber, finally allowing the Blue Blur to share the spotlight on equal footing.

Mario’s successor expresses “immense gratitude” for the legacy of 32-year veteran Charles Martinet
