NetherSX2 PS2 emulator adds online multiplayer support

While ARMSX2 recently made headlines as the first PlayStation 2 emulator for Android to feature multiplayer support, it has been confirmed that these same capabilities are now available for the more widely-used NetherSX2.

NetherSX2 has officially transitioned to version 2.2n, introducing experimental online multiplayer as its flagship feature. Developer Trixarian published the update on GitHub, accompanying the release with a seasonal message and a comprehensive list of technical refinements.

The implementation of networking features was made possible by integrating the DEV9 Ethernet module, a technology previously showcased in the ARMSX2 project. After ARMSX2 proved that Android-based PS2 emulation could support online play just a few weeks ago, the surging demand prompted the NetherSX2 team to incorporate a similar solution.

To activate online functionality, users must navigate to App Settings → Settings and toggle the “Enable DEV9 Ethernet” option. From there, set the API to “Sockets” and configure the desired connection method.

For a more tailored experience, players can manually input DNS addresses for services like PS2 Online or PSRewired, enabling access to various fan-hosted servers. A full directory of compatible titles is maintained in the PlayStation 2 Online Games (2024) spreadsheet.

In addition to its networking suite, the update delivers an extensive GameDB overhaul synchronized with PCSX2. It also addresses dozens of rendering and graphical bugs in iconic titles such as Silent Hill 3, Yakuza 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X-2, Battle Gear 3, and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.
