Bayonetta Creator Criticizes Switch 2 for Lack of a Proper D-Pad

Renowned Japanese game director Hideki Kamiya has voiced his frustrations regarding the controllers for the Nintendo Switch 2.

In a recent conversation with 4Gamer, the creative force behind legendary franchises like Resident Evil and Bayonetta revealed that although he had acquired the Nintendo Switch 2, he immediately encountered a design flaw that proved to be a deal-breaker for him.

“For some reason, in this era of diversity, the manufacturer stubbornly refuses to provide a Joy-Con variant with a proper D-pad. This is highly inconvenient for my personal gaming style—I usually play while lying down, so I am forced to rely on Joy-Cons.”

This absence of a directional pad initially led Kamiya to shelve the Switch 2 in favor of the original model, which supports a wider range of third-party peripherals that include a standard D-pad.

However, his desire to use the new console eventually won out. To solve the problem, Kamiya took matters into his own hands by modifying a third-party accessory from Cyber Gadget. He manually sanded down and reshaped a D-pad mini-grip originally designed for the first Switch until it fit the Switch 2 perfectly. This DIY solution finally allowed him to comfortably play his favorite titles, such as the Arcade Archives series, exactly how he wanted.
