A dedicated Monster Hunter Wilds player believes they have uncovered the source of the game’s notorious technical stutters, observing a significant performance boost when all downloadable content is activated.

The launch of Capcom’s latest hunting epic has been somewhat overshadowed by persistent optimization hurdles on PC. While the developers have initiated several updates to address these concerns, many players still find the experience lackluster. However, a Reddit sleuth may have cracked the code behind these sudden frame-rate drops.

Reddit user de_Tylmarande, who previously identified similar bottlenecks in Dragon’s Dogma 2, shared a comprehensive breakdown of their findings. The breakthrough occurred when they noticed the game ran much smoother on a friend’s account compared to their own. After ruling out hardware differences, they realized the only significant variable was that their friend owned the entire library of cosmetic DLC.

Intrigued by this discrepancy, de_Tylmarande utilized a mod to trick the software into recognizing all DLC as “owned” (without actually bypassing payment or unlocking the items themselves). This adjustment resulted in a dramatic FPS increase, particularly in crowded hub areas. The theory suggests the engine is being bogged down by excessive, repeated verification checks for unowned add-ons, which puts an unnecessary strain on the CPU.

While the idea that players must spend upwards of $500 on cosmetics to fix performance is a public relations nightmare, de_Tylmarande suggests this is likely a coding oversight rather than a deliberate “pay-to-play” choice by Capcom. Nevertheless, they warned that if an official fix isn’t deployed soon, they will release their “check-bypass” mod to the public to help struggling hunters achieve stable frame rates.
