According to Sankey, this sequence was ultimately axed due to budget constraints and limited resources.
“We integrated the boardable MAC cannon into the end of the ‘Pillar of Autumn’ mission as a compromise,” he explained. This adjustment allowed the team to preserve the first space-flight sequence, which eventually became the headline reveal for their E3 presentation.
Sankey expressed deep admiration for the Halo modding community, noting their ability to craft “incredible content” and wishing that Microsoft’s official offerings could capture that same level of innovation.
Interstellar dogfighting hasn’t made a formal return to the franchise since 2010, though Halo 4 featured high-speed flight segments that echoed the mechanic. While the rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake is unlikely to deviate into space combat, several new Halo projects are currently in the works, leaving the door open for a future return to the stars.
