“A treacherous, reactive medieval fantasy realm defined by absolute freedom, high stakes, and boundless opportunity.”
The open-world RPG sandbox Valorborn is scheduled to arrive on Steam Early Access on April 15.
The creators describe the experience as “a perilous, ever-evolving medieval fantasy world where player agency, tension, and possibility intersect.” This project marks a significant departure from the studio’s previous work, Land of the Vikings—a 2023 colony-management sim focused on community survival. In contrast, Valorborn narrows its focus to the journey of a single protagonist navigating a vast, unforgiving landscape.
The narrative arc of Valorborn is shaped entirely by the routes and decisions the player pursues. The universe operates as a living ecosystem: NPCs follow their own daily routines, rival factions struggle for regional dominance, and the simulation continues to unfold even in the player’s absence. A location that appears safe today may transform into a lethal war zone by the time you return.
Permanent death serves as a cornerstone of the gameplay. Laps Games views permadeath as a vital design pillar, ensuring that every tactical choice carries genuine weight. Players must carefully consider their path, whether they choose to survive as a battle-hardened mercenary, a stealthy thief, a skilled hunter, a lone wanderer, or as part of a coordinated squad.
