The debut teaser for Avengers: Doomsday has officially solidified Chris Evans’ return to the fold, though it appears Steve Rogers isn’t looking to reclaim his former mantle as Captain America.
Marvel Studios recently unveiled the first sneak peek for Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently screening exclusively in cinemas. The footage focuses entirely on the long-awaited re-entry of Steve Rogers into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In the clip, Rogers is seen returning to the home he shared with Peggy Carter following the climactic events of Avengers: Endgame. After a contemplative moment looking at his legacy suit, the scene shifts to the hero cradling a newborn, a sequence that explicitly points to Steve having a child. The teaser concludes with the definitive title card: “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
The specific phrasing of this announcement is significant; by using his civilian name rather than his superhero moniker, Marvel Studios reaffirms that Rogers has moved past the shield. This transition of the mantle to Sam Wilson, which began in the Endgame finale, has been further cemented through The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World.
Speculation regarding Evans’ return in a non-Captain America capacity has been circulating for some time. Industry insiders have previously floated the theory that he might appear as “Nomad”—an alternative identity from the comics. However, at this stage, such theories remain unconfirmed.
Over the next month, Marvel is expected to drop three additional teasers that may provide further context or debunk previous leaks. The studio reportedly plans to debut one video per week alongside major theatrical releases, including Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026.
