While he lent his talent to early spin-offs like *Mario’s Game Gallery* and *Mario Teaches Typing*, it was the revolutionary 1996 release of *Super Mario 64* that solidified Martinet as the definitive voice of the Mushroom Kingdom. Over the following years, he expanded his repertoire to include Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi, anchoring the franchise for generations.

“I can’t put into words how much these characters have meant to me throughout my life,” said Afghani, a lifelong enthusiast of the series. “I usually approach things with humor and a bit of silliness, but there’s a part of me that gets genuinely emotional discussing this transition.”

Afghani officially debuted as the voice of the plumber in 2023’s *Super Mario Bros. Wonder* and has since appeared in *Mario Kart World* and *Super Mario Party Jamboree*. Despite his active participation in these titles, he admits the experience still feels surreal. “At some point, I manage to disconnect and just think, ‘That’s Mario,’ even when it’s my own voice,” he added.

Note: Despite his retirement from the role, Charles Martinet remains dedicated to protecting the “integrity of the character,” often declining requests to record lines that fall outside Mario’s wholesome persona.
