“If your love for Baldur’s Gate 3 stems from its cinematic storytelling, the older games might not be essential unless you’re a lore enthusiast,” he noted. “However, if you’re drawn to tactical depth, co-op mechanics, and immense player agency, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a must-play—it was essentially the architectural foundation for BG3. The first Original Sin is also worth exploring, though it lacks the complex companion systems we refined in later years.”

It is worth noting that while Baldur’s Gate 3 is set in the Dungeons & Dragons realm of Faerûn, Divinity unfolds in Larian’s own world of Rivellon. Despite the different settings, the games are tethered by the studio’s unique design ethos, making their 2023 masterpiece the best indicator of what to expect from the next Divinity installment.

“For the completionists, the early library is there,” Vincke concluded, “but be warned—they are products of their time and may feel a bit aged by modern standards.”

Larian’s lead developer recently noted that technical constraints are shaping the current development cycle, necessitating significant optimization efforts during the early access phase.
