“Avatar” visionary James Cameron has outlined a contingency plan should the third installment, Fire and Ash, fail to meet commercial expectations at the box office.
Cameron revealed that in the event of a theatrical underperformance, he intends to host a dedicated press briefing to detail the intended narratives and resolutions for the fourth and fifth chapters of the epic franchise.
“I don’t know if the saga will progress beyond this point. I certainly hope it does. But as you know, we have to prove our viability at the box office every single time… If, for whatever reason, we aren’t able to produce the fourth and fifth chapters, I’ll call a press conference and lay out exactly what we had planned. How’s that for a deal?” Cameron shared during a conversation with Entertainment Weekly.
Produced by Disney with a staggering $400 million budget, Fire and Ash hit theaters last week and has already amassed $544 million worldwide. As of now, the fourth “Avatar” film is slated for a December 2029 release, with the fifth scheduled to follow in December 2031.
