The cinematic archetype familiar to millions would likely feel out of place in today’s cultural landscape.
The Cinematic Director for 007 First Light, an upcoming project centered on a young James Bond, recently sat down with FRVR to share insights into their creative vision for the legendary protagonist.
Martin Emborg previously noted that while the game will incorporate elements of the “charismatic Bond” that franchise enthusiasts expect, the protagonist is fundamentally a “modern man” designed to reflect contemporary sensibilities.
Emborg confirmed that Bond in 007 First Light will retain the “ladies’ man” charm of the earlier films, albeit through a modern lens:
Bond’s identity has evolved across the decades, and we are naturally aligning him with today’s values. This won’t be an ‘antiquated Bond’—such a portrayal simply wouldn’t resonate in the current climate. He is a man of his time.
Emborg highlighted that the development team has placed significant emphasis on refining the combat mechanics:
The combat is incredibly visceral, reflecting Bond’s athletic nature. It’s immensely fun and represents a leap into territory IO hasn’t explored before. We’ve also added considerable depth to the ranged combat—polishing it to an entirely new standard. There was a real hunger within the studio to tackle this direction. And, naturally, we have grand set pieces involving trucks, aircraft, and everything in between.
007 First Light is currently scheduled for release on May 27, 2026.
