After 37 entries on Billboard’s Streaming Songs chart, the 38th is the charm for J. Cole, whose “Interlude” debuts at No. 1 on the list dated May 22.
“Interlude” bows with 26.4 million U.S. streams in the May 7-13 tracking week, according to MRC Data.
It’s the rapper’s first No. 1 after coming as close as No. 2 three times. First, “Déjà Vu” debuted at No. 2 in December 2016, followed by “ATM” in May 2018, and most recently, “Middle Child” peaked at No. 2 in February 2019.
In Streaming Songs’ eight-year history, J. Cole holds the record for most entries before an artist’s first No. 1 after scoring one in his 38th try. Looking for someone who might be able to top his mark? Keep an eye out for Future, who despite having the second-most entries in chart history (78) has never reached No. 1.
Concurrently, “Interlude” starts at No. 8 on the multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, his sixth top 10.
J. Cole is expected to challenge for No. 1 yet again on the Streaming Songs chart dated May 29 thanks to the release of new album The Off-Season on May 14.
