“As I’ve mentioned previously, every Dragon Quest game features a singular word that defines and sells its unique identity,” Kitase added. “This concept reached its full potential in the fifth game. When I first played it, I chose Bianca. However, if I were to play it today, I think Nera might be my choice. It’s a striking realization—how much your life experiences and age can shift your perspective on such things.”
Horii, for his part, admitted he was surprised by the intense and lasting debate surrounding the marriage choice. “Even now, people are still discussing it,” he noted. “I didn’t anticipate it would become such a legendary talking point. My primary goal was simply to ensure that players felt the weight of the decision.”
“Initially, I assumed the vast majority would simply gravitate toward Bianca,” Horii continued. “However, I’ve found it interesting that many female players tend to prefer Nera. It seems they felt that choosing the childhood friend was almost too expected, and they wanted to avoid the path of least resistance.”
Looking back at the series’ legacy, Horii emphasized that the qualities of “warmth” and “accessibility” have been essential to the nearly 40-year success of the Dragon Quest franchise.
