Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore‑eda (Shoplifters) has commenced production on his latest picture, a science‑fiction drama titled Sheep in a Box.
The plot centers on a married couple who bring home a humanoid robot designed to take the place of their son. Kore‑eda said he drew inspiration from the “digital resurrection” technologies that have become prominent in China.
Leading the cast are Haruka Ayase (My Girlfriend Is a Cyborg) and comedian Daigo. The film is scheduled for release in 2026.
Kore‑eda’s previous film, Monster, was released in 2023 and earned him the Best Screenplay prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
