Farruko Scores First No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs Chart: ”Pepas’ Is Here to Stay’

Farruko crosses off a new milestone in his Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart career as his latest single “Pepas” rules the Aug. 28-dated survey. It dethrones Aventura and Bad Bunny’s “Volví” after its one week in charge.

“I’ve had a lot of success on the charts, and with this song going viral and global so fast, it feels great!” Farruko tells Billboard. “I just performed it for the first time at Baja Beach Festival and the energy was insane, so this news showed me that ‘Pepas’ is here to stay.”

The dance-rhythmic track rises 3-1 in its seventh week and earns the Puerto Rican his first No. 1 on the 34-year tally that blends airplay, streams, and sales.  He previously registered a No. 2 high as a featured act, on Sech’s “Relación,” with Daddy Yankee and J Balvin, which also features Rosalía (September 2020). As a solo act, without an accompanied artist, a pair of No. 4 peaked titles have granted him his highest entries until now (“Obsesionado,” April 2016 and “La Tóxica,” November 2020).

“Music is universal, and ‘Pepas’ felt right when we decided to record it,” Farruko continues. “It has foundations of reggaetón beats and I liked the vibe; it was something new for my usual scope of work or sound. I never thought it would be a No. 1. I am more than thankful with everyone’s acceptance and support of the song.”

“Pepas” steps to the Hot Latin Songs summit assisted by gains in all metrics, registering the biggest increase in streams: a 20% boost with 11.6 million U.S. clicks earned in the week ending Aug. 19, according to MRC Data. That’s a 1.9 million increase from its previous week, enough to enter the all-genre Streaming Songs list’s top 20 (29-18) and earn Farruko his first No. 1 on Latin Streaming Songs (2-1).

“Pepas” concurrently pushes up Hot Latin Songs supported by airplay. It gains territory on Latin Airplay through a 10-6 thrust with 7 million in audience impressions, up 10%, earned in the week ending August 22.

The EDM track produced by IAmChino, Sharo Towers, Keriel “K4G” Quiroz and Axel Rafael Quezada Fulgencio “Ghetto,” concurrently holds strong at No. 1 on Latin Digital Song Sales for a third week with 3,000 digital sales, up 5%.

“The song was not really challenging to write or put together,” he adds. “The challenge was coming up with the perfect chorus, to give it  the peak that a dance track delivers, and fans expect to hear.” “

“Pepas” concurrently rules Hot Dance/ Electronic Songs for a second week, his first No. 1 there. “I’m loving the Lil’ Jon remix so much, which I introed at the Baja Beach Club this weekend,” Farruko adds. “Also digging the Carnage Remix.”

With the Hot Latin Songs success, the club banger pushes new boundaries on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. It climbs 52-33, a new career high for Farruko after the No. 64-peak “Relación” (Sept. 2020).

Beyond its Hot Latin Songs coronation, “Pepas” gains new ground on the Global charts securing a spot in the top 10 on both tallies: It climbs 16-8 on Global 200 and 13-6 on Global Excl. U.S. chart.

About releasing more Latin/EDM tracks, Farruko concludes: “Anything is possible! For now, the focus is on enjoying the good feeling that ‘Pepas’ is bringing to the fans and the success it is having.”
