Fallout creator Tim Cain returns to Obsidian for a secret project

Tim Cain — the designer and programmer who originated the Fallout franchise — has returned to Obsidian Entertainment after departing the studio in 2020. He announced the move on his YouTube channel and confirmed he’s already working on a new project, though details remain private.

In his vlog, Cain explained that he’s back at Obsidian as a full-time, on-site employee rather than an external contractor. He emphasized the change in status and the hands-on nature of his current role.

During his previous tenure at Obsidian he co-directed The Outer Worlds, later acting as a creative consultant for its sequel. His earlier credits at the studio include South Park: The Stick of Truth (2014), Pillars of Eternity (2015) and Tyranny (2016).

Cain also noted he can’t discuss specifics about his current work because it’s covered by a nondisclosure agreement, so the project’s identity remains under wraps for now.

Speculation is natural: he could be contributing to anything from a potential Outer Worlds 3 to a new entry in the Fallout franchise. Both Bethesda and Obsidian operate under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella, and Obsidian is the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, a title many fans regard as a high point in the series.

With Prime Video’s adaptation of Fallout moving its story to New Vegas in its upcoming season, a direct sequel or a title that bridges the game and the show would be a compelling opportunity.

Whatever the assignment, it’s intriguing to have the original mind behind Fallout back on the Obsidian roster — and it will be exciting to see what he unveils once the NDA lifts.
