Lead writer Jennifer Svedberg-Yen shared a similar perspective, though she confessed that ignoring the audience isn’t always easy. She noted that while she naturally wants to satisfy the growing fanbase, she remains wary of losing the studio’s creative identity in an attempt to please everyone.
“Creatively, our North Star has always been our own personal taste—what we personally find compelling and want to experience,” she explained. “I’ve watched too many series and books lose their essence by trying to cater to a broad audience. We have to trust our gut and remain loyal to the studio’s original vision.”
This “instinct-first” approach certainly paid off for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Reflecting on the game’s massive success at the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards, creative director Guillaume Broche revealed that the team never expected a blockbuster hit. “We thought it would be cool, but we didn’t think it would be big,” he remarked, describing the global embrace of their work as a surreal and humbling experience.
As Sandfall Interactive moves forward, the industry will undoubtedly be watching closely. However, if their current philosophy holds, the studio will continue to prioritize the unique spark that made their debut so special.
