“I’m at the point where I’d welcome a complete rank reset,” one exasperated player shared on Reddit. “I’m in Oracle 4, but I don’t belong there. I’m a Ritualist-level player at best. To get back to where I should be, I basically have to lose games and let my team down for hours, which is a miserable experience for everyone.”
The issues aren’t just skill-based; they’re geographical, too. Another player reported, “I’m playing from Asia, yet yesterday I was tossed into a Chicago server. Dealing with unbalanced teams is one thing, but the lag makes it unplayable.”
While this instability is frustrating, the fact that even lead developers like Yoshi are facing the same issues suggests the problem is widespread. Valve hasn’t released a formal statement on the matter yet, but it’s worth noting that engineer Fletcher Dunn mentioned in 2024 that the team had experimented with ChatGPT to help design a new matchmaking algorithm, which was subsequently integrated into the game.
“Can you imagine playing a game where you have nobody to blame but yourself? Definitely not me,” joked another user. For now, Deadlock players have plenty of reasons to point the finger at the matchmaking bots instead of their own performance.
