When you embark on a Deep of Night run, the specific Nightlord target remains hidden until the expedition starts, and any active Shifting Earth states are suspended for the duration.

Prepare versatile Relic loadouts that cover a range of encounters, since the Nightlord you will face is unknown until the expedition begins.
In Deep of Night expeditions, enemies appear in stronger forms and rarer, more dangerous variants—identifiable by a distinctive red sheen—which present serious challenges to Nightfarers.
Fortunately, Nightfarers who accept these trials gain access to new tools and abilities designed to help overcome those perils.
During Deep of Night runs you can acquire weapons that carry multiple new effects by defeating enhanced enemies or clearing special encounters. Some of these weapons include powerful, previously unseen effects.
Keep in mind many of these weapons also impose detrimental effects. Loot with intention—check each item’s benefits and drawbacks before claiming it.
When chosen and deployed thoughtfully, these mixed-effect weapons can give you an edge that turns even the toughest foes into manageable threats.
Deep of Night expeditions also award Depths Relics, unique items obtainable only through these runs.
Depths Relics can only be activated during Deep of Night expeditions and introduce both novel powers and new drawbacks not present in standard relics.
These relics occupy three newly unlocked relic slots, giving you more options to combine effects and fine-tune your tactics alongside existing relics.
Use multi-effect weapons and Depths Relics in concert to bolster your Nightfarer and stand a chance against the escalating threats you will encounter.
In Deep of Night, defeating Nightlords raises your Rating, allowing you to progress to greater Depths.
With each increase in Depth, enemy power intensifies. You may encounter obscured map objectives or face a Nightlord whose identity remains concealed until the final confrontation. In multiplayer, matchmaking will generally pair players of comparable Depth.
On occasion, an Everdark Sovereign will appear on the third day of an expedition, further complicating the battle.
Combine the new weapons and relics to optimize your Nightfarer, coordinate with allies, sharpen your technique, and push back the encroaching darkness.
