Dragon Quest Lead Always Uses a Cleric Because He’s “Not Particularly Skilled” at RPGs

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined Gameplay Artwork

While Ichikawa’s comment is humble, it highlights a fundamental truth for any Dragon Quest veteran: a dedicated healer is indispensable. Beyond simple recovery, the Cleric is the most reliable path to learning Zing, a vital resurrection spell. Having this ability on hand saves players from depleting their stash of rare Yggdrasil Leaves or making long treks back to a church to revive fallen allies. The ability to cast party-wide heals is a literal lifesaver during the challenging mid-game grind.

Director Masato Yagi, meanwhile, leans toward a more aggressive playstyle, favoring the Martial Artist. “Their defensive stats aren’t the highest, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about landing that one decisive, critical blow that completely turns the tide of a battle,” Yagi explained.

This focus on player choice and party roles reflects the series’ core philosophy. As creator Yuji Horii recently noted, while Final Fantasy protagonists are often defined by extensive dialogue, Dragon Quest heroes serve as a silent vessel, allowing the player to truly step into the world themselves.
