The animated fantasy series The Dragon Prince — which alternated between thoughtful storytelling and occasional coarse humor — wrapped up its seven-season run in December. Co-creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond are not finished with the world: after unveiling the concept for The Dragon King at San Diego Comic-Con, they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the next chapter.

The campaign has already surpassed its initial $250,000 target by a wide margin, with pledges exceeding $570,000. The new narrative is set seven years after the events of The Dragon Prince and centers on the young dragon prince Zym as he attempts to shepherd a fragile peace across Xadia. His authority is soon tested by the return of an exiled rival who asserts a claim to the throne.

Ehasz — known for his work on Avatar: The Last Airbender — and Richmond will lead production, joined by longtime The Dragon Prince director Villads Spangsberg. Several familiar voices are returning: Jack De Sena as Prince Callum, Paula Burrows as the elf assassin Rayla, and Racquel Belmonte as the dark mage Claudia. Dante Basco — famous to many as Prince Zuko on Avatar — voiced Zym in the series finale, and the character will take on a much larger role in The Dragon King. They’ve also added Liam O’Brien (of Critical Role) to the cast as a new figure named Luna Devorans.

Backers are being offered tiered rewards that include access to a private Discord server and exclusive merch such as a Zym patch or a plush of Callum’s glow-toad bait. Higher pledge levels grant producer credits, small speaking parts, and even studio visits. Funds raised will pay for teaser materials to help pitch the series to studios; if the campaign reaches $1 million, the cast will also take part in an actual-play one-shot using the official Tales of Xadia tabletop RPG.
