Doja Cat captures her first chart champ on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart as her latest release, Planet Her, opens in the top slot of the list dated July 10. The set, released on June 25 through Kemosabe/RCA Records, begins with 109,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending July 1, according to MRC Data.
Planet Her marks Doja Cat’s third visit to the Top R&B Albums list, following the singer-rapper’s two immediate predecessors, Amala and Hot Pink. The former, released in 2018, reached a No. 20 peak on the chart in November 2019 as the release of Hot Pink that month fueled interest in Doja Cat’s catalog. Hot Pink, meanwhile, peaked at No. 2 on Top R&B Albums in May 2020 amid the height of popularity for the album’s single “Say So,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 that same month.
The 109,000-unit arrival for Planet Her easily rewrites the strongest weekly performance for any Doja Cat album. Her prior best came through Hot Pink’s 37,000 units in the week ending May 7, 2020. Of Planet Her’s starting figure, 96,000 units derive from streaming-album equivalents (representing 132 million on-demand streams of the set’s tracks), 9,500 are from traditional album sales and the remaining 2,500 arrives via track-equivalent units. (One unit equals the following levels of consumption: one album sale, 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams for a song on the album.)
Elsewhere, Planet Her launches at No. 2 on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and all-genre Billboard 200 charts. As with its R&B-specific entrance, Planet Her procures new career bests for Doja Cat on each ranking.
The album’s arrival sparks several debuts on corresponding R&B and hip-hop song charts. Of the songs not released in advance of the album, “You Right,” a collaboration with The Weeknd, proves the biggest. The team-up opens at No. 2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart thanks to 21.4 million U.S. streams in the week ending July 1 and kicks off at No. 10 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales through 7,000 downloads in the same period. A strong sales and streaming start powers “You Right” to a No. 3 debut on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which measures sales, streaming and radio airplay in its calculations for their respective genres.
The entrance is The Weeknd 18th song to break into the top tier, one-third of which have reached No. 1.
In addition to “You Right,” the Planet Her track “Ain’t Shit” bows at No. 10 to register Doja Cat’s fourth and fifth top 10s on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. The new pair follows “Say So” (No. 1 for two weeks in 2020), “Streets” (No. 7 in February) and a featured turn on Saweetie’s “Best Friend” (No. 6 in June).
Beyond the new top 10 duo, Planet Her also generates Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs hits “Woman” (No. 37), “Get Into It (Yuh)” [No. 40], and “Been Like This” (No. 48).
Activity surrounding Planet Her thrusts Doja Cat 10-3 to a new peak on the Billboard Artist 100, which ranks artist popularity through four music consumption metrics – album sales, track sales, radio airplay, streaming – and social media fan interaction. With the rise, she eclipses her previous best showing of No. 8 from May 2020 in her 76 weeks on the chart.
