Discord’s strategy relies on a proprietary machine learning model designed to categorize users into age brackets by analyzing account signals and behavioral trends. “We only apply these estimations when our confidence level is extremely high,” the company stated. “Importantly, we do not utilize private message content within this age estimation model.”
Regarding more intrusive methods, Discord clarified that facial biometrics are processed locally and never reach their servers or those of their partners. They also stated that government IDs are used solely for age extraction before being purged, appearing to firm up previous, more ambiguous language regarding data retention.
Furthermore, Discord noted that current verification vendors are distinct from those involved in the 2024 security breach and are audited to ensure minimal data storage. Despite these assurances, public reception remains skeptical. Discord has promised to release additional FAQs and blog posts to elaborate on its technical approach in the coming weeks.
