D&D Veteran Defends Larian: “Go Easy on Hard-Working Developers”

Larian Studios, the creative force behind Baldur’s Gate 3, recently faced a wave of scrutiny regarding their use of AI for concept sketches and internal drafts in a new Divinity project. Robert Kuntz, a legendary figure from the early days of D&D, has stepped forward to defend the studio’s integrity.

“Fans, go easy on the hard-working developers. It is disheartening to see Swen Vincke treated like an outsider. I wish the studio immense success in their future endeavors.”

In a subsequent post, Kuntz dismissed the backlash against Larian as “performative outrage” sparked by what he called “bad actor syndrome.” He emphasized that the RPG and D&D community should show more appreciation for the creators who build the worlds they enjoy.

“The RPG community that I helped establish between 1972 and 1974 was once far more gracious and respectful toward those who crafted their hobby.”

Swen Vincke has previously noted that the use of AI is a highly sensitive topic, clarifying that Larian strictly uses it for internal R&D and tech exploration. He gave his word that the final commercial release of the game would contain no AI-generated assets.
