Slipknot singer and solo star Corey Taylor has been very adamant over the past few months that COVID-19 is serious business. Two weeks ago, he revealed in a message to fans that he had tested positive for the highly contagious coronavirus and that he was “very, very sick.”
He announced at the time that he would not be able to make it to that weekend’s Astronomicon event in Ann Arbor, Michigan, saying he was “absolutely devastated… I am so sorry. I hope everyone has a good time and I promise you, I will absolutely try to get back there as soon as I can.”
Over the weekend, Taylor — who noted that he’s fully vaccinated in an earlier message — dove further into the story behind his illness in a video he recorded for the pop culture festival in which he chatted with a fan about the battle with the novel coronavirus that had him quarantined in a Denver hotel room going stir-crazy. “I try to keep my mask up the entire time,” he said of his safety precautions while on the road earlier this summer on his CMFT solo tour.
“You try to trust that people are vaccinated or they’re masking up and social distancing and at least testing negative before they go to something like that,” he said in the virtual talk with a fan during which he also revealed that he’s now tested negative for the virus.
“Sometimes you just run into those selfish people that don’t care about that,” Taylor said. “I think that’s what happened to me — somebody came to one of my shows and was in the audience sick and probably got several people sick, man.” After he tested positive, Taylor said in an interview that he didn’t believe there should be a mandate requiring proof of vaccination to attend show, even as he dinged fans who refused.
“If you’re going to put people at risk of getting sick, you shouldn’t want to go to a show. That’s common sense,” he told Consequence of Sound. “And if you do put people at risk, then you’re a f—in’ a–hole. And you shouldn’t be let in anyway”; Taylor has also lashed out at those spreading false conspiracy theories about the safety and efficacy of the vaccines.
In his video chat with the fan, Taylor noted that as a number of tours and festivals face cancellations or line-up shuffles due to positive cases and COVID surges caused by the highly contagious Delta variant, Slipknot has picked up a number of new festival slots (Riot Fest, Rockville) and are determined to keep performing until told otherwise. He also revealed that he’s almost done recording vocals for Slipknot’s next album, with just three tracks left to finish. “There’s some savage, heavy s–t,” he promised of the follow-up to 2019’s We Are Not Your Kind.
