Community Update 92

Surviving solo, Rust hobos, pixel art, and what you should never, ever say in voice chat.

Welcome

The brilliantly named EpicMilk123 is responsible for the header image. Inspiration came from both Rust and Firewatch, which means we get a Rusty scene in a Firewatchy colour scheme. Don’t you just love technical writing? Also notable: the reddit thread is universally positive, with the only slightly negative comment being: “That’s a bitmap dude, not a vector.” I have made a point of down-voting that comment.

Hardcore Solo Survival

Rust isn’t hard enough for some people, like Ser Winter, who took our beautifully balanced and completely perfect game and turned it into a hobo simulator. In the playthrough below, he imposed rules on how he could survive: everything scavenged; nothing earned (ie: no hitting rocks, trees). He could only eat what he found in trash or on bodies, and resources were gathered from the ground or corpses. Or traded, but you’ll see that trading is largely him running after people screaming for help.

It’s good to see a video where the player was honest about his enjoyment of the scenario, but even if you weren’t having fun I really enjoyed watching it.

Shotgun Model

Rayco Haex liked the concept art for our new shotgun so much that he modelled it. He made one small error in not realising that it was double-barrelled, but I’ll forgive that. The rest is really good. As Tom is fond of saying, have a spin of the model.

If that didn’t work, here’s a shiny screenshot.

If you click on his Sketchfab profile, you’ll see this is one of many concepts Rayco has worked on.

Bases of Rust – Chapter 1

I wonder if Rust players realise just how much they’re being watched? Take a look at this video by Swemba, who floats insubstantially through the Rusty Moose server, turning his admin view into an all-seeing eye and a Rust short. His focus is on the buildings littering the server, and not the shenanigans of those in them.

We got through a Rust video without a murder. Drink!

Pixelish Art

Over on reddit, enedden has been showing off his pixel-art skills. Across two threads, they came up with a pixellated Bolt-Action Rifle and an AK47. Have a peep.

If your game looks like this, you might not see what all the fuss is about. Sorry.

Fresh Horsing About

Shadowfrax, who has the most distinctive voice in all of Rust, tries to go undercover in a new solo series. He’s sprung right away, because his vocals can be recognised two towns over. I like getting in on long plays at the ground floor, so join him as he meets his neiiighbours.

He straight up murdered that guy. Disgusting.

The Free People Of Rust

Calls for clans are boring, tedious things. But a call for clans written as a manifesto? I’m all over that. That’s why I enjoyed Itsoc’s call on reddit for a “an open, dynamic community, within Rust; you enter in a server, ask for help to the Free People Of Rust, and receive help and shelter.”

Shall the FPoR gather in some wise flat location of the map and flourish through sharing and helping each other.
Shall the FPoR make a whole city built on respect.
Shall the FPoR struggle against Raiders, Gunmen and Bandits but never give in.

There’s more on reddit, and a good discussion about the challenges of “giving value to different things than items and gears or levels, but on new friendships, new struggles.” It’s all oddly hippyish. I hope to see if anything comes of it.

… And Finally

A reminder about what not to do with your codes.

This is why I never speak. Well, that and I’m shy.

Get In Touch

Think you’re working on something awesome? Tell me all about it. Now’s the time to share your base designs, or get into the growing Raid Cam business, or show off a game-mode from your server, or if your server has an interesting theme.

There’s a dedicated forum post, or you can fish for upvotes in the Subreddit. I also shuffle around the the Steam Community, so feel free to show me to things from there. You can follow and respond to Rust on Twitter, and I’m on there as well.

I can’t respond to everything, but I read every comment and take it all in.
