Sandfall Interactive’s debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has emerged as a breakout hit. Despite this early triumph, the French studio has no intentions of ballooning the scope of its future projects.
In a recent feature for Edge Magazine, Creative Director Guillaume Broche admitted that while the overwhelming interest in the release was unexpected, he views the game’s success as a testament to their philosophy.
“Every team is unique, and we structured our workflow to suit our specific talents. The secret is to tailor the game to the team, rather than the other way around. Our priority is making something we actually want to play. If a project is sincere, players will forgive minor flaws. It must possess a strong soul and a distinct identity.”
For many staff members, this was their first foray into a project of this scale. Early playtesting with friends and family provided vital feedback, while a modest budget necessitated the recruitment of young specialists, who brought a wave of fresh, innovative ideas to the table.
Broche further observed:
“Constraints are often the best fuel for creativity; they push you to become a better version of yourself. While we now have the resources to scale up, that path doesn’t interest us. We are more passionate about the act of creating games than the logistics of managing them. The past five years have been among the most fulfilling of my life, and I simply want to sustain that level of happiness.”
